AI image tools: what they're good for, and what they're not

Great for mood boards and quick mock-ups, less great for anything that needs to be exact. A practical guide.

AI image generators turn a text description into a picture in seconds. They've become genuinely useful for some jobs — and remain frustrating for others. Knowing which is which saves a lot of time.

Where they shine

Exploring ideas quickly: mood boards, rough concepts for a room, a few visual directions for a presentation or a blog header. When the goal is “roughly like this”, they're fast and cheap.

Where they struggle

Anything that has to be precise. Readable text inside images, exact product details, consistent characters across several images and accurate hands or diagrams still often go wrong. Expect to generate several versions and choose.

Writing a better prompt

Describe four things: the subject, the setting, the style and the framing. “A ceramic coffee mug on a wooden kitchen table, morning window light, soft natural photo, close-up” works far better than “a mug”.

Mind the rules

Check each tool's terms for commercial use, avoid recreating real people, logos or other people's artwork, and label AI images where it matters — many platforms now ask you to.

Try today: Describe one image you need this week using subject, setting, style and framing, and compare it with a one-word prompt.
